Abstract

Introduction: Depression, one of the most prevalent mental disorders on a global scale, has aroused substantial interest in the academic and clinical community. However, its complex association with several psychiatric comorbidities further increases the relevance of this condition. Objective: To comprehensively analyze the relationship between depression and psychiatric comorbidities. Methodology: This is a bibliographic review, using articles present in the following databases: PubMed, Scopus and SciELO Original articles and systematic reviews in English and Portuguese published between 2019 and 2024 were included, which addressed the relationship between depression and comorbidities psychiatric. After analysis, 15 articles were selected to prepare this bibliographic review. Results and Discussion: A solid evidence base was observed that highlights the complexity of the relationship between depression and psychiatric comorbidities. Analysis of epidemiological studies has revealed that the co-occurrence of these conditions is a substantial reality, with anxiety disorders emerging as one of the comorbidities most frequently associated with depression. Conclusion: The bidirectional dynamics observed in the relationship between depression and psychiatric comorbidities highlights the need for a longitudinal approach to assessment and treatment.
