Abstract

The present study focused on composite resin modelers commonly used in contemporary dentistry to facilitate the final sculpting process in composite resin restorations. A literature review was conducted by consulting databases to compile a comparative table illustrating differences and the studies covered. Article selection was limited to English publications with no temporal constraints. Out of a total of 228 titles found, 19 were related to the technique, but only 4 articles were considered, as they exclusively addressed composite resin modelers. This review highlighted potential alterations in the mechanical, optical, and/or surface properties of composite resins. However, the application of composite resin modelers has shown varied results in the short term, with neutral or positive impacts in some studies and negative outcomes in others. There is a noticeable lack of scientific evidence in the literature definitively recommending or discouraging the use of these modelers. Therefore, the use of composite resin modelers is not contraindicated, but clinicians opting for their use are advised to also perform thorough polishing of the restoration and conduct long-term follow-ups.
