IMPACT ON MENTAL HEALTH IN BRUMADINHO: ANALYZING CONSEQUENCES OF THE DAM BREACH AND THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

The population of Brumadinho experienced, in a short period of time, the disaster caused by the collapse of the dam belonging to the mining company Vale and the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the context of crises, the psychological impact suffered by the population was investigated. A cross-sectional and quantitative study was carried out comparing, using Datasus data, the number of prescriptions for mood stabilizing drugs; antipsychotic medications; psychosocial care and hospitalizations for mental disorders in four periods: before the dam failure; after the disruption and before the pandemic; in the pandemic; after the start of vaccination. As results, we obtained: positive variation for all variables; mood stabilizers as the highest growth variable; almost doubling the number of hospitalizations for mental disorders. The data indicate a growing demand from the population for support for mental health actions, confirming the seriousness of the incidents faced and alerting to the indispensability of public-private actions to support and manage the population.
