Introduction: Sepsis is a severe clinical syndrome triggered by a dysregulated systemic inflammatory response of the body to an infection. Its complexity lies in its clinical variability and the need for rapid intervention to improve patient outcomes. Objective: This study aims to review recent advances in the understanding of sepsis, including its pathophysiology, early diagnosis and treatment, highlighting challenges and emerging therapeutic strategies. Methods: A literature review was conducted through a search of electronic databases, selecting relevant studies published in the last 15 years that have contributed to the understanding of sepsis. Results and Discussion: Challenges in the identification and treatment of sepsis include clinical heterogeneity, antimicrobial resistance and variability in response to treatment. Recent advances, such as early biomarkers and adjuvant therapies, offer hope for a more effective approach. Conclusion: Despite persistent challenges, advances in the understanding and management of sepsis provide opportunities to improve patient outcomes. Interdisciplinary collaboration and ongoing research are key to addressing this global challenge and reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with sepsis.
