Abstract

Whooping cough, also known as whooping cough or spasmodic cough, has high transmissibility and universal distribution, and can affect all age groups. Objective: to carry out a ten-year historical series of whooping cough cases recorded in Amazonas. Methodology: Retrospective, descriptive study with a quantitative approach to public data. The data collected were obtained directly from the website of the reference hospital in Amazonas and SINAN-NET between 2014 and 2023. Results: During the period, 100 cases of this pathology were recorded without any deaths. The age group most affected by whooping cough was individuals under 1 year of age, with 64.6%. Among adults, there was also a predominance of cases among females (57%) and mixed race (66.8%). The years 2014 to 2018 were those with the highest number of records, but the statistical curve indicating new cases had a significant decline in subsequent years, possibly due to good vaccination coverage and preventive actions. The months of February to May, which correspond to the rainy season in Amazonas, were those with the highest number of cases recorded in the ten years. Conclusion: it is necessary to keep vaccination rooms open throughout the unit's opening hours, avoid access barriers and take advantage of vaccination opportunities such as appointments or other procedures
