Abstract

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is defined as a common, treatable and preventable disease, which is characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation due to airway and/or alveolar abnormalities, generally produced by large exposure to particles or fumes harmful. Pharmacological therapy should be complemented with non-pharmacological approaches, including behavioral therapies and pulmonary rehabilitation, as appropriate, as is the example of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Materials and methods: A bibliographic search was carried out in PubMed between the years 2016 and 2022, the descriptors used were “transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation” and “Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease”, combined with each other using Boolean operators. 6 articles were considered for the integrative literature review. Results and discussion: Sensory electrical stimulation is the application of electrical currents with the aim of stimulating the sensory system and promoting physiological adaptations in the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system, with the production of therapeutic effects. According to the studies that were analyzed, there was an improvement in the condition of patients with COPD after undergoing therapy, showing an improvement in heart rate, an increase in oxygen saturation, and improving feelings of fatigue and dyspnea.
