Abstract

The prevalence of depression among the elderly in Brazil is a public health problem. In this context, Primary Health Care (PHC) proves to be a crucial link in promoting the mental health of the elderly, from prevention and early diagnosis to treatment and monitoring. This work aims to analyze the relationship between care in Primary Health Care (PHC) and the reduction in the number of cases of depression in the elderly in Brazil, understanding the mechanisms through which PHC contributes to the mental health of the elderly by offering health practices more effective preventive measures. This article represents an ecological study based on a cross-sectional and observational design to analyze the relationship between care in Primary Health Care (PHC) and the reduction in the number of cases of depression in the elderly in Brazil, through secondary data through a literature review. The target population is made up of elderly people aged 60 or over, cared for in primary health care units. Although the problem has a significant prevalence, regarding the elderly population, the number of cases of depression diagnosed is low. It is estimated that around 50% of depressive conditions in this age group are not diagnosed by health professionals who work in primary care. In this way, early detection of depression allows for timely interventions, preventing the progression of the disease and minimizing its negative impact on the functionality and independence of the elderly.
