Abstract

Workers' mental health is a topic of increasing importance in the current context, in which labor market demands are intensifying and the search for productivity and competitiveness is becoming more pronounced. Objectives: to analyze the relationship between night work hours, shift work, and workers' mental health. Materials and methods: This is an integrative review, in which the guiding question was "Is there a relationship between work hours and workers' mental health?". The search for articles was carried out in PubMed using the terms "working hours", "night work", "workers" and "mental health", combined with each other by Boolean operators. Results and discussion: The results show that shift work was associated with an overall increased risk of combined adverse mental health outcomes. Specifically, the risk of depressive symptoms was 33% higher in shift workers than in non-shift workers. In the study by Seongchan Heo, statistically significant results were obtained in the relationship of each of the work-related factors with depression and anxiety. Regarding night shift work, participants with no night shift work experience had 1.6% depression and 2.1% anxiety; those who worked night shifts 1 to 9 times per month had the highest rates of depression (5.0%) and anxiety (8.5%). Conclusion: This study reveals that there are mental health consequences associated with shift work and night work.
