Abstract

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and Takotsubo syndrome (TS), also known as stress cardiomyopathy, are distinct clinical conditions that affect the cardiovascular and neurological systems, respectively. Recently, evidence has emerged suggesting an interrelationship between SAH and Takotsubo syndrome. Objective: to explore the connection between subarachnoid hemorrhage and Takotsubo syndrome. Materials and methods: this is an integrative review, in which the guiding question was “Is the association between Takotsubo Syndrome and subarachnoid hemorrhage more serious for the affected patient in terms of neurological recovery, cardiac function, complication rate and mortality?”. The search for articles was carried out in PubMed using the terms “subarachnoid hemorrhage” and “takotsubo syndrome”, combined with each other by Boolean operators. Results and discussion: recent prospective studies have confirmed that TS is a relatively common complication of acute SAH, occurring in up to 28% of cases. In SAH, TS is associated with an increased risk of cardiac and noncardiac complications. Previous reports suggest that TS is a risk factor for arrhythmias, pulmonary edema, and delayed cerebral ischemia in SAH. Conclusion: Our study concluded that the incidence of Takotsubo Syndrome in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage is variable, reaching up to 30%, with a significant predominance in women. The severity of SAH was significantly greater in patients with TS than in those without the syndrome.
