Abstract

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare and severe dermatological condition characterized by necrotizing ulcers that often evolve into extensive and painful lesions. In recent years, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has emerged as a promising therapeutic option for a variety of medical conditions, including chronic injuries and inflammatory diseases. Objective: to explore the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the treatment of pyoderma gangrenosum. Materials and methods: this is an integrative review, in which the guiding question was “In patients with pyoderma gangrenosum, how effective is hyperbaric oxygen therapy in terms of wound healing rate, pain reduction and treatment time?”. The search for articles was carried out in PubMed using the terms “hyperbaric oxygen therapy” and “pyoderma gangrenosum”, combined with each other by Boolean operators. Results and discussion: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy consists of inhaling 100% oxygen while the patient is inside a hyperbaric chamber at a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure, favoring the healing process of damaged tissue. This therapy has been shown to effectively treat PG ulcers and reduce pain associated with PG. Conclusion: Although there are no controlled trials confirming the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in PG, several case reports point to the benefits of this therapy alone or as an adjuvant.
