Hospitalization is a process that promotes a reduction in body muscleAbstract
Objective: Hospitalization is a process that promotes a reduction in body muscle mass and bone mineral density, which leads to a loss of functionality in varying degrees, which can increase hospital stays and promote a reduction in quality of life after the hospital stay. Therefore, our objective is to verify if the implementation of physical exercises during the hospitalization of elderly patients can reduce such injuries. Methodology: The study is a literature review, in which 98 studies were found, and after applying the eligibility criteria, only five were included to compose this study. The years of publication of the studies included were from 2005 to 2020. Results: It can be concluded that a comprehensive assessment is crucial to indicate or contraindicate physical exercise, directing which types of exercises and their intensity and frequency, also understanding that they must be standardized and individualized. There were significant improvements in muscle strength and functionality in older adults who received physical exercise during hospitalization.
