Introduction: The thyroid is a gland located in the anterior part of the neck with the common occurrence of nodules, being generally recommended its resection almost always complete, with the nickname total thyroidectomy. This surgical procedure may be succeeded by some temporary or definitive side effects that influence the quality of life of patients. Objeticve: This work aimed to perform a bibliometric and systematic review of the literature in order to expose the impacts of total thyroidectomy on the quality of life of patients who have undergone surgery. Method: This was a systematic review of literature with bibliometric approach that aimed to map the scientific production from 1992 to 2019 about the proposed theme, being identified 53 articles on Thyroidectomy and its side effects. Results: Of the 53 total, after a systematic and careful review, 38 articles were excluded and 15 were included. Discussion: It was observed that the removal of the thyroid and its complementary therapies in fact can be succeeded by side effects that impact both post-surgical, as in the quality of life of the patient, having as most common, hypothyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, hypocalcemia and recurrent laryngeal nerve injury. Conclusion: Associated with total thyroidectomy, we almost always have the radioiodine therapy, this in turn, is also endowed with its side effects, with the main some changes in the salivary glands, focusing on xerostomia, concluding finally that the scientific production on this subject is still scarce and of paramount importance to add knowledge to researchers and health professionals.
