Abstract

This study objective to analyze the relationship that producers and consumers have in their interaction in local markets through empirical studies in short food supply chains. For this purpose, the systematic review methodology was used to analyze publications on short food supply chains, available on Web of Science, SCOPUS, and complementary material. For that, Ucinet® software was used as support. The results found pointed out that, from the 26 researched works, published from 2014 to 2019, 21 have empirical applicability. It is possible to see, in these studies, that the social aspect is the one that had the most significant prominence, because they are even able to serve as a bridge between different social contexts, both in their components of needs and those of their potential. On the other hand, the economic aspect appeared, at times, neutrally, or with the primary motivation in reducing transportation costs and eliminating the intermediary agents that represented heavy expenses. Some issues, such as small-scale environmental care on small properties, for example, show up as gaps in the study, which raises the question: will SFSCs (Short food supply chains) be able to limit the environmental damage generated and, besides that, to promote positive externalities produced by some agricultural models, in terms of improving the landscape or protecting agrobiodiversity? The role of trust in the producer/consumer relationship was highlighted. The other studies are surveys referring to the profile of consumers or farmers, behavior surveys, and sociodemographic surveys.
