Polyunsaturated fatty acids, acetylsalicylic acid, periodontal treatmentAbstract
Studies on the effects of lipoxin metabolites (arachidonic acid) and omega-3 (ω-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (specialized pro-resolving mediators) in association with the potentiating effects of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) on the modulation and inflammatory resolution of periodontal disease, showed beneficial results as an adjuvant therapy to the treatment of periodontal disease. The present study aims to review the current literature on the effects of ω-3 and its combination with ASA in the treatment of periodontal disease. Double-blind, parallel design, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials were used as the literary basis for this literature review. The data obtained demonstrate improvements in periodontal clinical parameters, in the reduction of levels of pro-inflammatory biomarkers and in the modulation and resolution of the inflammatory response of periodontal disease, evidencing a favorable intervention in the inflammatory condition. It is noted that host immunomodulation therapy with ω-3 demonstrates benefits in clinical and inflammatory parameters according to current literature.
