Abstract

Introduction: Gestational diabetes mellitus (MGD) is considered as any degree of glucose intolerance, which results in hyperglycemia and is detected for the first time during pregnancy and may lead to the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus, later, if left untreated. Nutritional treatment can bring several benefits and achieve glycemic control if done correctly. Objective: to show through a literature review the benefits of the use of nutritional treatment in gestational diabetes mellitus, so that more damage to the health of the pregnant woman and also of the baby is avoided. Method: a literature review was performed using the following keywords: pregnant women, pregnancy, feeding, diabetes, gestational, control and healthy. The databases used were Google Scholar, MEDLINE and LILACS. The inclusion criteria were articles published between 2012 and 2022, written in Portuguese or English found in the platforms mentioned above. Articles that did not enter the inclusion parameters and that were not related to the theme addressed were excluded. Results: among the 24 articles selected for review, 10 were relevant and included in the study. It was observed that feeding should be the first form of treatment used for MGD and that in most cases, it alone is sufficient to improve the pregnant woman's blood glucose. Conclusion: the use of food as an alternative for the treatment of MGD is recommended and obtains positive results when done correctly with nutritional follow-up.
