Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder that can cause abdominal pain and bloating, bloating, irritability, anxiety, and depression. Its classification may vary according to the predominance of constipation, diarrhea or mixed bowel habits. Its diagnosis is based on symptoms and the absence of other diseases related to the gastrointestinal tract. Treatment can vary between pharmacological, diet therapy, and use of supplements, where interest in the use of probiotics has been highlighted. The study aimed to verify the repercussions of the use of probiotics in the nutritional management of patients with IBS. This is a narrative bibliographic review of the literature, using scientific articles from PubMed, SciELO and Science Direct databases, in English and Portuguese, in which a total of 30 studies were selected, with the 7 main ones highlighted in a table. Probiotic supplementation, associated with a balanced diet, with the reduction of fermentative foods, corroborates both the reduction and control of symptoms, as well as the quality of life of patients with IBS.
