Abstract

Objective - This study aimed to analyze food consumption in autistic children, as well as nutritional deficiencies and possible associated diseases, describing food suggestions for this public. Methods - Twenty-five articles were selected through the SciELO, Medline, PubMed databases and on the NCBI website, 15 of which were used in the review. The period of inclusion of the articles was from 2013 to 2022, in which 70% correspond to the period from 2018 to 2022. Results - Most of the articles that analyzed autistic children confirm that this audience has food preferences correlated with ultra-processed foods, which can be indicative of an imbalance of essential nutrients for its development, becoming a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. There were no reliable considerations related to specific diets to control the progression of ASD, only suggestions that the exclusion of gluten and casein and the use of the ketogenic diet reduces mild but not significant symptoms. Conclusion – In view of the data collected, it is concluded that autistic children tend to have a restricted diet, and the evaluation of their food consumption becomes a tool to prevent possible health problems. Therefore, it is essential that scientific research continues to be carried out to better suggest food for this audience.
