Abstract

The recognition of the Brazilian sign language (Libras) as the official language of deaf people from decree No. 5626/2005 represented a major advance in the inclusion of deaf students in the school context. Discussions about the increase in special education, with regard to the adaptation of schools to satisfactorily meet students with special educational needs (SEN), has been gaining momentum in recent decades. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the teaching practice in the teaching of English Language to deaf students in high schools in the city of Caxias, MA. This research is categorized as basic, with quanti-qualitative methodological approach, through bibliographic and fieldwork. Regarding the population, the field research was conducted with teachers of the subject of English Language, interpreters of Libras and deaf students in the second half of 2019. As a result, it was realized that with the use of Scaffoldings, which enables the student to perform a task, the application of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) to develop students' cognitive skills, and the use of adapted methodologies and strategies for teaching it becomes possible to teach English Language to deaf students.
