Abstract

The aim was to evaluate the evidence on the use of systemic probiotics as adjuvants to scaling and root planning (SRP) in the treatment of periodontitis A review of the literature was conducted. Different bacterial species have been used as probiotics. Positive clinical results were obtained. Probiotics also showed a favorable effect in maintaining a health-compatible microbiota and positively modulated the immune response. The adjunct use of probiotics to RAR seems to be stronger in cases of moderate and deep pockets. Scientific evidence is still insufficient to recommend the use of probiotics in periodontal clinical practice.
