GINGIVOPLASTY ASSOCIATED WITH AN OSTEOTOMY TO HARMONIZE A GUMMY SMILE: A CASE STUDY

Abstract

The smile with excess gums directly influences the formation of a non-harmonious smile, bringing dissatisfaction and damage to the self-esteem of the bearer. In this way, cosmetic dentistry can be employed as a dental solution to this problem. Among the techniques employed, gingivoplasty, gingivectomy associated with osteoplasty, and osteotomy can be mentioned. The satisfactory results of these techniques make them widely applied in dental offices worldwide. Therefore, this work aimed to describe a clinical case of gummy smile correction. The case of a 30-year-old patient complaining of a gummy smile was carried out at the Dental School Clinic of Centro Universitário Ingá – Uningá under the supervision of a periodontics specialist. The altered passive eruption was diagnosed as the cause of the gummy smile. Furthermore, the patient had mandibular vestibular exostosis. Periodontal surgeries of gingivoplasty/gingivectomy associated with osteoplasty/osteotomy were performed successfully and without postoperative complications. There was good healing and evolution of the case. Ultimately, the treatment can be concluded as satisfactory by the patient and successful, achieving the estimated objective.
