EFFECT OF HYGIENIC RESTRAINT ON PERIODONTAL TISSUE: LITERATURE REVIEW

Orthodontics is a sought-after area for treating dental malocclusion and aesthetics. After the end of the treatment, the use of retainers is indicated to prevent the movement of the already-aligned teeth. Fixed retainers, as in the case of hygienic ones, can lead to the accumulation of plaque and tartar, which in turn can lead to periodontal diseases. Among the most severe aggravations of periodontal disease, tooth loss is the most frustrating to the patient. This work highlights the consequences of so-called "hygienic" containment on periodontal tissues. Eleven articles were selected during the preparation of the review. The survey showed that the current data are not homogeneous and concise. For other types of retainers, prolonged use and great longevity demonstrated no deterioration in periodontal health. Further studies on the subject are suggested to elucidate the issue.
