EFECTO DE LA CONTENCIÓN HIGIÉNICA SOBRE EL TEJIDO PERIODONTAL: REVISIÓN DE LA LITERATURA

Resumen

La ortodoncia es un área muy demandada para el tratamiento de la maloclusión dental y la estética dental. Una vez finalizado el tratamiento, se recomienda el uso de retenedores para evitar el movimiento de los dientes ya alineados. Los retenedores fijos, como en el caso de los retenedores higiénicos, pueden provocar la acumulación de placa y sarro, lo que a su vez puede provocar enfermedad periodontal. Entre los empeoramientos más graves de la enfermedad periodontal se puede destacar la pérdida de dientes como el más frustrante para el paciente. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo resaltar las consecuencias de la denominada contención "higiénica" sobre los tejidos periodontales. Se seleccionaron 11 artículos durante la preparación de la revisión. La encuesta mostró que los datos actuales no son homogéneos ni concisos. Para otros tipos de retenedores no se ha demostrado ningún empeoramiento de la salud periodontal con un uso prolongado y una gran longevidad. Se sugieren nuevos estudios sobre el tema para dilucidar la cuestión
