Abstract

Delirium is an acute and multifaceted neuropsychiatric condition that manifests itself as a disturbance of consciousness and a reduction in cognitive capacity. Objective: To analyze the pathophysiological mechanisms and therapeutic approaches to delirium, providing an updated synthesis of the scientific literature. Methodology: This is a bibliographic review, using articles from the following databases: PubMed, Scopus and SciELO Original articles and systematic reviews in English and Portuguese published between 2009 and 2024, dealing with the pathophysiological mechanisms and therapeutic approaches to absence epilepsy, were included. After analysis, 36 articles were selected for this literature review.  Results and Discussion: The pathophysiology of delirium is complex and multifaceted, involving a complex interaction between neurochemical, neuroinflammatory, neuroendocrine and structural factors. Although its exact etiology is not yet completely understood, several theories have been proposed to explain the mechanisms underlying this neuropsychiatric syndrome. Therapeutic approaches to delirium are multifaceted and involve a combination of non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions, aimed at identifying and treating precipitating factors, providing symptomatic support to the patient, and preventing associated complications. Conclusion: Ongoing education and training of healthcare professionals is essential to improve early recognition of delirium, facilitating timely and effective interventions.
