Abstract

This study investigates the prevalence of burnout syndrome and associated characteristics among higher education teachers in Portugal. The sample consisted of 19 higher education professors. The study adopts a quantitative approach, using the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Educators Survey (MBI-ES) to measure the dimensions of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalisation (DP) and personal accomplishment (PA). The descriptive analysis revealed a predominance of low levels of EE and DP, and moderate levels of PA among the participants. Inferential statistical analyses explored the relationship between burnout and demographic variables such as age, gender and the type of educational institution (public and private). The results indicate that burnout is significantly influenced by the organisational environment, with teachers in private institutions showing higher levels of emotional exhaustion compared to their peers in public institutions. The importance of intervention strategies that integrate psychological support and organisational reforms to prevent and mitigate burnout is strengthened.
