Abstract

New modern habits are changing food dietary, for this reason, several diseases, including obesity and diabetes, are increasing in the world population. The rising demand for alternative treatment, for this reason, intermittent fasting has been put on evidence. To gather information regarding the possible effects of intermittent fasting on obesity and/or diabetes mellitus. A narrative literature review was carried out through advanced research in the PubMed, MEDLINE, SciELO, LILACS, and ScienceDirect databases with the following descriptors in English contained in the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS): “intermittent fasting”, “obesity” and “diabetes mellitus”. Twenty articles with Qualis A1, A2, B1, and B2, published on the period of 2016 to 2019, including all types of work, except case reports, all of those were involving the application or information about intermittent fasting associated with obesity and diabetes mellitus without specific results for intermittent fasting, with those criterion 2425 articles were found. Intermittent fasting intervention resulted in decreasing peripheral insulin resistance, weight, inflammation, and improvements in life quality. In conclusion, there are benefits to health promoted by intermittent fasting when compared with patients with diabetes mellitus and/or obesity, but these positive impacts on humans can't be confirmed without proper confirmation. More research in humans is needed to significantly assess the results obtained through intermittent fasting, especially studies with randomized controlled clinical trials, due to many studies nowadays are being made in animals, mostly on rodents.
