Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease characterized by hyperglycemia, and often accompanied by dyslipidemia, hypertension and endothelial dysfunction, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Its prevalence has increased globally; it is a serious public health problem in both developed and developing countries. This review aims to assess the effect of ginger (zingiber officinale) on the glycemic and lipid profile in individuals with type 2 Diabetes mellitus. It is a narrative review in which three databases were consulted, namely Pubmed, Scielo and Google Escolar. As for the inclusion criteria, randomized clinical trials that evaluated the effect of ginger supplementation on type 2 diabetes mellitus were included. Results from clinical trials support evidence of the effect of ginger on insulin, glycaemia, glycated hemoglobin, HOMA-IR, cholesterol control total, LDL-c, triglycerides in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The mechanisms are still being studied; it is believed that ginger inhibits the activity of digestive enzymes α-amylase and α-glucosidase.

Keywords: Ginger; ginger officinale; Type 2 diabetes mellitus.
