Abstract

Phytotherapy is a therapeutic resource that contributes to the treatment and prevention of various oral pathologies through the use of medicinal herbal medicines (phytomedicines). In recent years the use of natural products has grown significantly because it presents lower toxicity, good pharmacological and biocompatible activity, in addition to the more affordable cost for the population. The study aims to report the therapeutic properties of medicinal plants and their actions in the treatment of oral disorders through a literature review of academic works, within preventive and curative planning in dentistry. To write the research, the bibliographic survey was composed of the Scielo, Medline, Google academic and Lilacs database, presenting reasoned and published information in the period between 2015 and 2020, with the exception of basic articles that were relevant for the study, and Portuguese/English languages. The selection of the research-guide question was used; search in the literature; categorization of studies; evaluation of studies; interpretation of the results and synthesis of knowledge. The study presented that the proposal of natural products guarantees therapeutic effectiveness, lower toxicity and better biocompatibility, scientifically proven, when compared to conventional drugs, has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-hemorrhagic and anesthetic action. Pomegranate, aloe vera, chamomile, propolis and copaíba have shown that they are plants considered beneficial and can be applied as treatment alternatives for oral disorders. When indicated correctly they build satisfactorily for the dental health of the individual.
