Nutritional monitoring is of great value during the postoperative period of bariatric surgery, since it is possible to identify errors and eating disorders, nutritional deficiencies, stimulate real expectations of weight loss and prepare the patient for the postoperative period. This article aims to carry out an integrative literature review, aiming to identify food consumption and the main nutritional deficiencies that affect patients after bariatric surgery. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review based on the analysis of scientific articles referring to food consumption and nutritional deficiencies in the postoperative period of bariatric surgery. Scientific articles published in the last 5 years, including the period from 2015 to 2020 in English and Portuguese, were included in this survey. Results and discussion: 13 observational studies were selected that related to food consumption and nutritional deficiencies in the post-surgical period of bariatric surgery performed with individuals of both sexes, race and age over 18 years. Based on strong evidence, nutritional deficiencies are one of the complications of bariatric surgery, with the most common deficits found being those of vitamin D, vitamin B12, iron, calcium and folic acid. Conclusion: People who have undergone bariatric surgery may have possible nutritional deficiencies, where nutritional deficiencies have been shown to be higher in patients who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, thus, nutritional monitoring is essential in the post-surgical period.
