Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a global health problem that has reached alarming levels, with nearly half a billion people currently living with the disease. Various treatments are used for the control of DM, including monotherapy or therapeutic combinations, among which the use of oral antidiabetic agents and herbal medicines is very common, with turmeric emerging as a potential ally. With its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hypoglycemic actions, Curcuma longa demonstrates activity not only in the control of type 2 diabetes mellitus but also in its complications such as diabetic nephropathy. The oral bioavailability of turmeric faces adversities due to its low absorption, limited tissue distribution, short half-life, and rapid hepatic biotransformation rate, thus being a limiting factor for clinical approval. The article provides a current review of the main aspects of the use of turmeric as an adjuvant in the treatment of DM and concludes that this plant has beneficial properties for diabetic patients.
