Abstract

Currently in Brazil, the National Curriculum Guidelines recommend that the Pedagogical Project of Medical Courses (PPC) be designed taking into account a central aspect, which defines the student at the center of the teaching-learning process and the teacher as facilitator. These recommendations are in line with international recommendations for medical training, as well as internationally accepted quality criteria. In this sense, this article aimed to report the experience of the implementation of the PPC of Medicine of the Department of Health Sciences of the Cent of Sciences, Technologies and Health (DCS/CTS/UFSC), in the municipality of Araranguá/SC, emphasizing the innovative aspects of the curriculum and the challenges to be overcome. This was a case study, based on the theoretical framework presented and documentary analysis. The study took place from July 2018 to December 2019, when the first 3 semesters of the course were implemented. As conclusions, the course project, although contemporary and aligned with the new recommendations, presents many obstacles, among them: the need for advances in interdisciplinary teaching practice, as well as in understanding the epistemological scope of the project; it allows access to continued teacher qualification and the adaptation of the academic management system for the course, which does not follow disciplinary methods. Finally, the political uncertainties regarding compliance with the More Doctors Program during the period of implementation of the beginning of the course further tensioned internal relations, being another obstacle to interdisciplinary work.
