Medicinal plants have received greater attention in recent years, especially due to the implementation of the National Policy on Medicinal Plants and the National Policy on Integrative and Complementary Practices in Brazil. Aromatherapy is a practice that uses the aroma of essential oils to obtain therapeutic benefits, such as physical and psychological well-being, for the treatment of various diseases (antiallergic, anticancer, anti-inflammatory), and strengthening defenses of the organism (immunomodulatory effect). It is one of the integrative and complementary practices offered by SUS since 2018. This study aims to review information about the influence of aromatherapy (essential oils) on the immune system, in order to better understand this relationship. This paper is a narrative literature review study, searching information in articles available in databases as the Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde (BVS), US National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), Scholar Google e Web of Science. The essential oils obtained from certain plants have a potential effect on the modulation of the immune system, which are useful as alternative or complementary treatment of infectious diseases or even immune diseases. The activity of essential oils involves mechanisms not yet understood, and there is evidence of regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, induction of anti-inflammatory markers, immunoglobulins and other pathways. Studies on the effects of essential oils need to be intensified, for their better characterization and evaluation of the toxic potential in order to obtain the best efficacy and safe use.
