Abstract

Minoxidil began to be implemented in the 1970s to treat severe refractory hypertension due to its vasodilatory properties. Unintentionally, early trials of oral minoxidil as an antihypertensive medication documented side effects such as hypertrichosis and hirsutism with chronic use and reported the drug's potential to stimulate hair growth. Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of oral minoxidil for treating alopecia. Materials and methods: This is an integrative review, in which the guiding question was “Is oral minoxidil effective in the treatment of alopecia?”. The search for articles took place in the PubMed database using the terms “oral minoxidil” and “alopecia”, combined using Boolean operators. Results and discussion: Oral minoxidil appears to have positive effects in improving hair growth in patients with different types of alopecia, but the data in this review are of very low quality. Several retrospective case series have reported that oral minoxidil is an effective treatment for female androgenetic alopecia with favorable side effects. Conclusion: Oral minoxidil is being used more and has proven to be effective but is limited by its side effects compared to the topical formulation.
