DIRECT INJECTION AND COMBUSTION CHARACTERISTICS OF ETHANOL IN DIESEL ENGINES: A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW

This study aims to explore an effective alternative to mitigate the impact of diesel engine emissions, proposing the total or partial replacement of diesel with ethanol, with a focus on improving performance and reducing emissions from internal combustion engines. The research was carried out through a systematic literature review, which uses systematic methods to analyze and catalog articles found in databases, using StArt software as a tool for this stage. The studies analyzed reveal that the use of alternative fuels, such as ethanol, biodiesel, and methanol, in combination with diesel, as well as the injection of hydrogen and water, can significantly improve the performance and reduce the emissions of internal combustion engines, especially diesel engines. The use of single-cylinder test engines and numerical models was crucial in validating these findings. It is concluded that the combination of alternative fuels with advanced injection and combustion techniques has the potential not only to improve engine efficiency, but also to significantly reduce pollutant emissions. However, continuous optimization of these methods is needed to balance performance and sustainability, providing a solid basis for future research and technological developments in the transport sector.
