Abstract

The emergence of COVID-19 highlighted the importance of mining activities to the goods and services industries in the globalized world. Declared a Public Health Emergency in January 2020 by the World Health Organization (WHO), the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged health authorities, who sought to interrupt the transmission of the disease through measures of social isolation, causing the interruption of global supply chains. In the first half of 2020, all economic sectors were impacted by the scenario of uncertainty in the global economy, including the mineral sector and the demands for critical metals. We conducted a brief reflection on changes in behavior and consumption during the COVID-19 crisis and its impacts on the mineral sector, including the main challenges of the “new normal” and the strategic minerals sector.
