Intermittent fasting is a method defined by periods of little or no caloric intake. The main protocols studied in humans are: ADF, 5:2 Protocol, Time Restricted Feeding (TRF). Overweight and obesity bring metabolic consequences that are predictors of cardiovascular disease, such as: hypertension, dyslipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia, insulin resistance; impact on health markers and lead to greater morbidity and mortality. Among the forms of treatment for overweight, change in eating habits is a priority measure. The TRF dietary strategy will provide this intermittent calorie restriction and associated with these changes in eating habits will favor the weight loss process, and may also improve obesity-related comorbidities. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of time-restricted eating on overweight. This is a narrative literature review, with scientific articles published in the bibliographic database: Publisher Medline (PubMed), using the descriptors: fasting, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. The present study demonstrated that TRF (Time Restricted Feeding) is a safe and effective alternative to be used in overweight adults and the elderly. The results indicate that weight loss occurs and body composition improves with lower percentages of body fat and waist circumference.
