Abstract

Casearia sylvestris Swartz is a native plant used in folk medicine. A bibliographic review was carried out in order to analyze the panorama of the studies with aqueous extracts of C. sylvestris and also the patent registrations deposited at the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI). No patent registration has been identified with aqueous extracts of specie. Scientific articles were produced mainly between 2006 and 2010 and the biological properties investigated were medicinal applications, antidote for snake venom and allelopathic action. Although this plant is already traditionally used, studies with aqueous extracts are scarce, indicating the need for further research.
