Abstract

Palliative care consists of care provided by a multidisciplinary team, which aims to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. In oncology, these precautions are important. In this context, the objective of this article is to highlight the importance of the oncology pharmacist in the area of palliative care. To this end, an integrative review of articles published from 2011 to 2021 in the MEDLINE and VHL databases was conducted. The results demonstrate that the role of pharmacists in the palliative care team has been increasing over the years. It is observed that the early intervention of pharmacists as members of the palliative care team, improves the patient's length of stay, minimizes pain and opioid-induced adverse events, optimizes therapy, and improves the quality of life of patients diagnosed with cancer. Therefore, pharmacists' knowledge should be explored and incorporated into the activities of the palliative care team, since it has been proven to improve care for this population.
