Abstract

Newborns (NB) have an immature coagulation system, which only regularizes in the first year of life, and may occur later in patients with heart disease. The need for the use of anticoagulant therapy in newborns has increased in recent years, but there are still few studies focused on the pediatric population, which makes it difficult to standardize the drug of choice and adjust the dosage. This is an integrative literature review on anticoagulation therapy in newborns. Thrombosis is an effect that rarely occurs in young patients, the group most associated with this event (among young people) are newborns. Among the drugs with anticoagulant action, the most used in this age group is heparin, as it is the drug with the most studies proving the best action and safety of these drugs. However, there is still a difficulty in using this drug, because they act by binding plasma proteins, and these are reduced in newborns. Heparin is strongly associated with adverse effects in the pediatric population, which is why several studies have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of oral anticoagulants, such as warfarin and dabigatran. There are few studies that address anticoagulation in pediatrics, and the studies that exist on the subject only address heparin. There are ongoing studies that use oral drugs and which bring expectations of the release of the use of these drugs for the pediatric age group in the coming years.
