The work enables a relationship with the external environment, building its internal reality and inserting into social groups. Retirement, in turn, began to be related to the removal and dismissal of work, resulting in the rupture of social ties. 28 elderly farmers in the municipality of Diamantino – MT, male and aged between 65 and 87 years, most with Incomplete elementary school, married, residing with wives, and/or children and/or grandchildren, 50% receive retirement and Continued Benefit. The interviewees were composed of farmers whose ownership of property(s) does not exceed 100 hectares classified as small producers, and the second by producers with property(s) totaling more than 100 hectares. For the analysis, we used the Theory of Social Representations and the method of content analysis of the discourse. The meaning attributed to retirement, the following categories were classified: Dignity, End of a cycle, Dishonor, Bureaucracy, Self-income and Self-Awareness. Thus, it was possible to realize that retirement is recognized as a guaranteed right, however, the interviewees report many bureaucracies to be able to retire, and the low monetary value is perceived as a dishonor and lack of recognition to the elderly, but also allows the survival and access to other services of people who have limitations at work
