Abstract

The objective of this article was to understand the use of steel in civil construction, describing the different properties, characteristics and classes of steel, classifying its use in civil engineering and specifying its advantages and limitations. Methodologically, this is a narrative-type bibliographical review research, carried out in 2016, with a qualitative approach and exploratory nature that was based on books, articles and Master's dissertations printed or made available on the Internet, in Portuguese, published between the years 2006 and 2016, which are related to the topic addressed. To search for articles and dissertations, the platforms SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), CAPES (Portal of Periodicals of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) and Google Scholar were used. It was found that this material has several properties that make it a widely useful material in civil construction, and that the applications of steel in civil construction have expanded from its main use, the formation of structures, to the use of roofs, facades architectural structures, modular elements, pipes and urban furniture, due to their durability, flexibility and pleasant aesthetic finishes.
