ADIPOKINS: THE CRUCIAL ROLE IN THE REGULATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF OBESITY

Abstract

Obesity is defined as “abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that poses a risk to health”. Extensive experimentation in animal models demonstrates that adipose tissue expansion induces a complex and broad immune response involving both the innate and adaptive arms of the immune system, playing critical roles in the regulation of glucose metabolism and inflammation. Materials and methods: This is an integrative review, in which the guiding question was “What are the main roles of adipokines in the immunology of obesity?”. The search for articles was carried out in the PubMed and Scielo databases using the terms “adipokines”, “obesity” and “immunology” combined with Boolean operators. Result and discussion: Obesity increases the risk of metabolic, cardiovascular, chronic inflammatory diseases and several malignant diseases and, therefore, may contribute to the reduction of life expectancy. A balance between cytokines is necessary for an adequate immune response. However, a pro-inflammatory state in obese patients disrupts this essential balance. Therefore, adipose tissue is not a mere energy deposit, but also an endocrine organ that participates in the immune response. Conclusion: Adipokines are increased in obesity, deregulating the individual's immune response, exposing him to various health risks
