EFFECT OF PHOTOBIOMODULATION THERAPY ON DENTIN HYPERSENSITIVITY IN PATIENTS WITH MOLAR INCISOR HYPOMINERALIZATION: AN INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) is characterized as a qualitative defect of the dental enamel and causes changes in the surface of the affected teeth, with varied clinical characteristics and colors. Among the clinical changes presented, dentin hypersensitivity is found in most patients, causing a painful sensation after contact with external stimuli. Considering the various treatment alternatives for dentin hypersensitivity in patients with MIH that are available in the literature, laser therapy is one of them. The present study aims to observe what the literature addresses about the use of photobiomodulation therapy, with the use of low-power laser, in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity in patients diagnosed with Molar Incisor Hypomineralization. To this end, the study consisted of an integrative review of the basic, qualitative, descriptive literature and was based on the PubMed and Google Scholar research platforms, exploring the terms “Molar Hypomineralization”, “Dentin hypersensitivity”, “Low-Level Light Therapy”. Thus, it is observed that articles in the time range from 2019 to 2024 in English and Portuguese were included, totaling 07 articles. After analyzing the selected articles, it was possible to conclude that the use of low-power laser acts positively and helps to reduce dentin hypersensitivity, stimulating local odontoblastic activity, as well as helping in the process of altering the desensitization of neural networks present in the region, with a painful sensation and acting synergistically and potentiating with other treatments, such as desensitizing agents, glass ionomer and fluoride varnishes.
