USO DE LA CÚRCUMA COMO ADYUVANTE EN EL TRATAMIENTO DE LA DIABETES MELLITUS: UNA REVISIÓN DE LA LITERATURA

La diabetes mellitus es un problema de salud mundial que ha alcanzado niveles alarmantes, con casi medio billón de personas que actualmente viven con la enfermedad. Se utilizan diversos tratamientos para el control de la DM, ya sea monoterapia o combinaciones terapéuticas, entre las cuales el uso de agentes antidiabéticos orales y fitoterapéuticos es muy común, y la cúrcuma se presenta como un aliado potencial. Con sus acciones antioxidantes, antiinflamatorias e hipoglicémicas, la cúrcuma larga demuestra actividad no solo en el control de la diabetes mellitus tipo 2, sino también en sus complicaciones, como la nefropatía diabética. La biodisponibilidad oral de la cúrcuma enfrenta adversidades debido a su baja absorción, distribución tisular limitada, corta vida media y rápida velocidad de biotransformación hepática, lo que la convierte en un factor limitante para la aprobación clínica. El artículo presenta una revisión actual de los principales aspectos del uso de la cúrcuma como coadyuvante en el tratamiento de la DM y concluye que esta planta tiene propiedades beneficiosas para los pacientes diabéticos.
