Abstract

Hypertensive crises are severe forms of sudden elevation of blood pressure, manifestation of systemic arterial hypertension. In them, there is a high risk of damage to target organs, when it is a hypertensive emergency, or not, when it is a hypertensive emergency. In addition, there are different conducts for their different classifications, with or without indications for hospitalization. Objective: This bibliographic review aims to describe the concepts, classifications and procedures for the different types of hypertensive crisis, in addition to the existing therapeutic possibilities. Methods: This is a literature review whose articles were selected from the LILACs, SciELO, Google Scholar and Brazilian Society of Cardiology Guidelines databases in Portuguese, English and Spanish, with the following descriptors: hypertension and emergencies. Final considerations: The present bibliographic study made it possible to delve into the literature regarding hypertensive crisis, as well as its classifications and conduct in hypertensive urgency, hypertensive emergency and pseudocrisis. There is a need for further studies on the subject and the determination of conducts in hypertensive crises regarding the prevention of target organ injuries, their limitation and strategy after the event, so that these patients do not have a new crisis.
