CARDIOVASCULAR BENEFITS OF MODERATE RED WINE CONSUMPTION

Introduction: red wine consumption has been studied since 1981, when the French paradox of fewer cardiovascular diseases despite higher alcohol consumption was discovered. Given the above, this study aims to clarify the benefits of red wine consumption on cardiovascular health. Methodology: this is an integrative literature review, in which the terms "red wine", "cardiovascular health" and "benefits" were searched, combined by Boolean operators. Articles published between January 2010 and January 2022 were delimited. Results and discussion: individuals with comorbidities, such as hypercholesterolemic and diabetic individuals benefited from moderate red wine consumption through increased body antioxidant capacity and cholesterol regulation. The phenolic compounds in wine may be able to modulate leukocyte adhesion, while ethanol and polyphenols may modulate inflammatory mediators. Further, the association between wine consumption and physical exercise was shown to be effective in controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Final considerations: Therefore, this study concludes that moderate intake of red wine associated with exercise and a balanced diet has cardiovascular benefits, even in patients at risk. The phenolic compounds and ethanol, present in wine, serve as modulators at the molecular level.
