Abstract

Introduction: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) occurs due to the increase in the clonal population of dysfunctional B lymphocytes, where there is a prevalence of mature B lymphocytes, located in peripheral blood, bone marrow, spleen and lymph nodes. This type of leukemia most often affects men aged 55 and over. CLL is a hereditary and multifactorial disease. Objective: To understand the behavior of B cells in chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review. The question that guided the preparation of this manuscript was: 'How do B lymphocytes participate in CLL?'. Searches were carried out from September to October 2022, in the BVS and ScienceDirectct databases, using the following descriptors indexed in Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) and Medical Subject Heading (MeSH): ‘Leukemia, B Cell, Chronic’, ‘Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia’, ‘Leukemia, Chronic B-Lymphocytic’, ‘Leucemia Linfocítica Crônica de Células B’, ‘Leucemia Linfocítica Crónica Tipo Células B’. Texts in Portuguese, English and Spanish published from 2017 onwards were included, excluding duplicates and texts that did not address B cells as the central theme of the study. Results: CLL is seen as a chronic lymphoproliferative neoplasm, characterized by the accumulation of mature B lymphocytes in peripheral blood, lymph nodes, spleen and bone marrow. Discussion: It is observed that the unregulated apoptosis of these cells results in
