problem characterized by hyperglycemiaAbstract
Diabetes mellitus is considered a global health problem characterized by hyperglycemia. Nutritional therapy has been fundamental to obtain good glycemic control, becoming decisive for the success of pharmacological treatment. In this context, this study aimed to discuss mindful eating and how it can be beneficial in the management of diabetes. For this, a narrative review was performed using the databases Pubmed, LILACS, Scielo and Google Scholar with the following descriptors in English (DeCS/MeSH): "diabetes mellitus", "mindful eating", "nutrition" and "treatament". A total of 30 studies were included in the synthesis, of which five were discussed in greater detail on the "application of conscious eating in diabetic patients". Most studies had a sample size of more than 20 people. Most patients were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. The studies applied techniques that taught patients to eat mindfully. According to the results obtained, advanced age has been related as an independent factor associated with high levels of conscious eating, in addition, higher levels of mindfulness were related to a lower and more contained external and emotional eating behavior in diabetic adults. The findings suggest that this approach may be a promising strategy to aid treatment in diabetes. However, prospective and/or experimental studies are necessary to better understand how food awareness can act in the treatment of the disease.
