Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of protein supplementation in preventing sarcopenia in the elderly, a condition associated with the loss of muscle mass and strength due to aging. An integrative literature review was conducted focusing on clinical trials published in the last five years, accessed through the PubMed and SciELO databases, using selected descriptors according to DeCS and MESH terms. After analyzing the articles found, following predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, 23 studies that studied a variety of approaches to protein supplementation in the elderly were selected as the final sample. Some studies reported significant benefits in improving muscle mass and strength in elderly people who received protein supplements, while others found no significant differences compared to a control group. The diversity of results can be attributed to differences in the dose, duration and type of protein supplemented, as well as the individual characteristics of the participants. The studies reviewed in this research suggest that protein supplementation, especially when combined with resistance exercise, can play an important role in the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia in the elderly. However, the effectiveness of protein supplementation may vary depending on several factors, such as the type of protein, the dose administered, and the intervention period. In addition, combining protein supplements with other nutrients, such as vitamins, may have additional benefits for muscle health.
