Abstract

Iodine deficiency can affect various aspects of human development, linear growth, and physiological organ functioning. Fortunately, iodine deficiency can be prevented through universal salt iodization. The objective of this study was to evaluate the iodine content of table salt sold in the city of Nampula, Mozambique. This is a laboratory, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. A total of 33 samples of table salt sold in the City of Nampula of different types and brands were collected. The quantification of the iodine content in salt was based on the Manual of the Adolfo Lutz Institute (2008). The sample consisted of 39.4% fine salt, 30.3% coarse salt and 30.3% sea salt. The adequacy of the iodine content in the samples showed adequacy of 42.4% and inadequacy of 57.6%. The iodine content in the salt was different between the iodine content of sea salt with refined salt and coarse salt. The results observed in this study show that most of the types of salts marketed in the City of Nampula are inadequate in iodine, according to current legislation, so it is recommended by the regulatory authorities to intensify their regulatory activities to mitigate this situation.
