SOCIAL REPRESENTATIONS OF SUPPORT PROFESSIONALS ABOUT THE SEXUALITY OF AUTISTIC ADOLESCENTS

Objective: To identify the social representations of support professionals about the sexuality of adolescents with autism. Method: This is a descriptive qualitative study, with primary data from interviews with professionals who care for adolescents from an institution that supports families and people with autism. The data were organized using the methodology of the collective subject's discourse and analyzed based on the theory of social representations and the results of other studies. Results: Six categories of social representations characterized in the discourses of the collective subject were identified. Final considerations: The social representations showed the unpreparedness and difficulty of the professionals in dealing with the theme and the singularities of the sexuality of people with autism. The process of constructing social representations about the sexuality of autistic adolescents is in the anchoring phase, and requires the expansion of discussions and research on the subject to enter the phase of objectification, which will allow the externalization of concepts and images of the experiences and reality of adolescents with autism in relation to their sexuality.
